The Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society sponsors the Ben H. Procter Research Paper Award prizes each year to the best of the papers presented by Phi Alpha Theta student members at the Southwestern Social Science Association annual meeting. Competition is not limited to the Phi Alpha Theta sections. The prizes include monetary stipends.
Awards may be given in each of three categories – (1) United States History, (2) European History, and (3) Asian-Latin American-African History. Each paper will be evaluated on the basis of its clear thesis, good analysis, smooth error-free writing, good use of a wide range of sources, and effective use of scholarly notes and bibliography. Length of papers should be appropriate to the 20-25 minutes allotted time for presentation in the program sessions, e.g., 10-13 double-spaced pages plus notes.
