Bob East was a colorful and widely known veteran photographer at The Miami Herald. He died tragically from a surgical procedure accident in March 1985, after more than 45 years in the profession. In 1961 he built the Monthly National Clip Contest into a permanent event which was to become NPPA's most popular feature. He was NPPA national secretary for two terms: 1966 to 1968. In Miami he actively integrated news photography into the journalism profession by becoming a local leader of the Society of Professional Journalists. At The Miami Herald, he was particularly remembered by the interns as one who welcomed and encouraged newcomers in photojournalism.
