Scholarship Description

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarship assistance to students pursuing studies in Natural Resources or Horticulture with a preference for students from the Seacoast region who are matriculating at the University of New Hampshire, including students at the Thompson School of Applied Science.

HISTORY:
The FESTIVAL OF TREES is co-sponsored by the Portsmouth Garden Club and the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development, Division of Forests and Lands - Urban Forestry Center. Held every other year at the Urban Forestry Center, this unique event is a major fund-raiser for the Portsmouth Garden Club.

Members of garden centers, garden clubs, historical homes, businesses, and individuals perform their magic with fresh trees and greens and inspire visitors with their ideas for holiday decorating.

Because of the public’s interest and generosity, more than $52,000 has been donated since 1983 to help support educational programs and beautification projects throughout the City of Portsmouth. Historical homes, gardens, parks, and other worthwhile endeavors have been recipients of the proceeds from the FESTIVAL OF TREES.

The Urban Forestry Center, the grounds on which the FESTIVAL OF TREES is held, was a bequest to the State of New Hampshire by John Elwyn Stone in 1976. The purpose of the center is to educate and create awareness of the importance of natural resources. This is one of the largest open spaces preserved in any community in the seacoast area.

To help beautify, improve and preserve for the future is a prudent execution of the stewardship of the Portsmouth Garden Club.
