In 1943, Fred C. Lynam, Bar Harbor Banking and Trust's first vice president, and later, treasurer and president, established a trust under his will "they may consider particularly beneficial to and advantageous for the people of Mount Desert Island." In 1949 at the discretion of the Board of Directors, they decided to use these charitable funds to award scholarships. These renewable awards are restricted to graduates of Mount Desert Island High School who are residents of Mount Desert Island. Recipients must reapply each year. The Maine Community Foundation partners with Bar Harbor Trust Services, Trustee, in administering this scholarship.
