The Judith Resnik Memorial Scholarship was established in 1988 to honor the memory of the astronaut and Senior SWE member who was aboard the ill-fated Challenger space shuttle, which exploded on January 28, 1986. Dr. Resnik was known for her can-do attitude. "Let's solve the problem and get on with it!" She was the second U.S. woman to fly in space and served as a Mission Specialist on the maiden voyage of the space shuttle Discovery. A biochemist and electrical engineer, Dr. Resnik was an active member of the Houston SWE Section and was named a Fellow in Electrical Engineering by the American Association of University Women. She was an outstanding role model for women in engineering and believed that women who make breakthroughs in space or other horizons must pursue their endeavors to the end of full equality. Dr. Resnik is also memorialized by SWE's Resnik Challenger Medal, which is awarded for visionary contributions to space exploration. The scholarship is awarded to an active SWE student member entering her sophomore, junior or senior year in aerospace, aeronautical or astronautical engineering.
