The Michael Bates Memorial Scholarship is given to any qualified Kansas college journalism student.
The Michael Bates Memorial Scholarship, worth $1,500, is named in memory of former Associated Press journalist Mike Bates. Bates covered central and western Kansas specializing in agricultural reporting. During his lengthy career, Bates covered the 1991 tornado that devastated Andover, the Karen Silkwood trial, and the six-week Wichita abortion protests in 1991. Bates was president of the Kansas Professional Chapter of SPJ at the time of his death in 1996.
To qualify for the Michael Bates Memorial Scholarship, applicants must carry a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), be enrolled in and pass 12 hours of college credit, and participate in outside journalism-related activities demonstrated by involvement in student or trade organizations and/or student or other news organizations or publications. The winner of the scholarship will also receive additional financial help on transportation and registration to the Society of Professional Journalists national convention.
